The 2017 season of Varsity Basketball was pretty solid this year. For the past three years, the Ross Cosmos was pretty consistent in terms of basketball. However, this year’s team made a lot of improvements. The first thing that really helped the Cosmos to improve is our new coach. Based on how the team did this year, Nygel Roach is one of the most experienced coaches that Ross School has had for many seasons. By the way, Nygel Roach is an alumni of Saint John’s University, where he played for three years. The fact that we had a new coach definitely helped the team to improve their skills and conditioning. In addition to that, the team had more victories than last year. Last year’s team won only one game under Max Krieger against Shelter Island(63-40). The two previous years, Ross Cosmos ended up with no victories at all. However, this year, our team was able to win two times against Smithtown Christian (66-59) and (66-61). The progress of our team wasn’t just because of the new coach, it was also because of the new players this year. James Meng ‘19, a new student at Ross this year, helped the team a lot by averaging 7.6 points per game and scoring 16 three-pointers this season. James was also a very good defensive player.

He was really god in terms of rebounds and blocks that he had. Another player who contributed a lot this year was Ben Bijur ‘18. It is Ben’s second year in varsity, but was his first Ben averaged 16.1 points per game and his highest career points was ’’37’’ against Bridgehampton. Ben Bijur is the captain of the team and by the end of the season, he received an award for the most valuable player.

Overall, the team improved a lot and the Ross Cosmos is looking forward to more wins next year.

Good luck boys!
