The 2017 season of Cross Country had a fairly successful start in the fall. Last year’s team didn't have enough runners, but all the runners still had a pretty successful season. The reason why our runners did pretty well last season is because of our coach who started coaching students before the meets even started. Mr. Roberts pushed his runners everyday after school in order to improve their times and to make them stronger. In the beginning of the season, many runners couldn't even handle the distance that they should accomplish. However due to our training, by the middle of the season, all students were able to run the distance. In the first meet against Shelter Island, Mercy, and Port Jefferson, the boys showed that they are capable of long distances and that they could definitely improve. Enrique Pichardo(25:27) and Leo Liu(25:52) looked really good in their first meet, placing 6th and 7th.. Their times were really close to the runner from Mercy who took 5th place in the marathon. The girls also showed passion for running, especially Liz Cummings(29:01) who placed 5th against Port Jefferson. In the first couple of meets, the students’ condition wasn’t good enough, but by the next meet against Southold, the runners showed a lot of progress. Enrique Pichardo(22:29) showed incredible improvement by beating his previous time by 6 minutes and placing 5th. Leo Liu was also one of the athletes who showed great improvement by beating his previous record by 1:35. There were also other athletes who completed their first 5K race: Jackson LaRose(28:24), Kendall Coard(34:12), Isa Adamkul(37:46), and Georgyi Avdalyan(37:32) In addition to that, girls showed wonderful results. Liz Cummings(32:11) was a top runner among all the girls competing at the meet, even though she was feeling sick. Chelsea Coard (32:18) had an improvement by beating her previous time by 2:06. Moreover, Jenny Lam (32:42) had an improvement of 2:38

Overall, we can see how hard the cross country team worked throughout the season and how lucky are we to have such a helpful coach like Peter Roberts. Coach Roberts was very satisfied with the progress of the athletes. “Everyone is showing good improvement by giving their best during the daily workouts. With their continued work, we expect to see more improvements on more challenging courses’’ said Peter. Ross School is looking forward to more victories and improvements next year.

Good Luck!
